We compare every plan sold where you live, check both kinds of financial help, and price out the tax side. No cost to you, and your premium is the same either way.

Open enrollment for 2027 runs November 1 through January 15. December 15 is the deadline for a January 1 start.

What to have ready

20 minutes on the phone gets you real numbers.

  • Your ZIP code and who needs coverage
  • The doctors you want to keep, by name
  • Your prescriptions, and the dose
  • Your best guess at 2027 net income. It sets what you pay each month.
  • Whether a spouse has a plan at work. It changes the deduction.

What is different for independent contractors

01

Your income is an estimate

Your financial help is set on what you expect to earn in 2027, then squared up on your tax return. Estimate too high and you overpay all year. Too low and you owe some back in April.

We help you set a number you can defend.

02

The 400% cliff is back

The larger credits that ran 2021 through 2025 expired and were not renewed. For 2027 the financial help stops at 400% of the federal poverty level.

Income that swings year to year can land on either side of that line.

03

Premiums are usually deductible

You can generally deduct premiums for yourself, a spouse and dependents without itemizing, up to your net self-employment income.

It disappears for any month you could have joined a plan at your own or a spouse's employer, taken or not.

04

Bronze plans are HSA-qualified now

Bronze and catastrophic plans became HSA-qualified on January 1, 2026.

A low monthly premium can now sit alongside a tax-advantaged account, which was not an option before.

Dates

When you can enroll

  • November 1 through January 15

Open Enrollment Period (OEP) for 2027. December 15 is the deadline for a January 1 start. After that, coverage begins February 1.

  • A Qualifying Life Event (QLE) opens 60 days

Losing job coverage, a marriage or divorce, a baby, a move to a new county. Each one opens a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), 60 days from the event, any time of year.

  • Income changed mid-year

A raise or a slow quarter changes what you should be paying. Reporting it mid-year avoids a surprise in April.

On a Cigna plan today? It ends December 31, 2026, and there is no 2027 version to renew into. Call us and we will line up the replacement.

Once you hire

If you have people on payroll

The math changes once you have employees. An ICHRA lets you set a monthly amount, reimburse it tax-free, and skip group renewals.

Still just you

An individual plan is almost always the answer.

You and a spouse

Usually still individual plans. We run it both ways before you decide.

Five or more employees

ICHRA territory. We run the numbers either way.

Fifty or more

Affordability testing applies and the timeline is longer.
